Hong Kong, December 19 (NA) — The Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in Hong Kong expressed "deep dissatisfaction and firm opposition" to statements by Western governments regarding the judicial case against businessman Jimmy Lai, as learned by the Argentine News Agency.
Criticism of G7 and allied countries' statements
The spokesperson described the communiqués issued by the G7 foreign ministers, the European Union, and countries such as Canada, New Zealand, France, and Japan as an unacceptable interference in China's internal affairs and the judicial power of Hong Kong.
He stated that Lai acted as a "pawn" of external forces and was tried for crimes such as inciting subversion, secession, and threatening national security, in an open process supported by evidence.
Defense of Hong Kong's judicial system
The official affirmed that the verdict—of 855 pages—was reached on objective bases, with the full participation of the prosecution and the defense.
According to the spokesperson, Western criticism "masks" political interests and seeks to pressure Beijing, although it "will not manage to alter" the implementation of the national security law or Chinese sovereignty over Hong Kong.
